A Japanese animator and director, whose work has received more international acclaim than any other animation director, especially after his collaboration with the Walt Disney Company in his recent works. He started working in 1963 at the Toei Douga studio, then worked in several other studios until he directed his first cartoon series, Future Boy Conan (1978), after which he worked for his own company, Studio Ghibli, which he co-founded. Among his notable movies are Spirited Away (2001) and Ponyo (2008).
