He left his managerial job to pursue acting, and made his first movie, Escape from Alcatraz, in 1979. Then he became famous for his role as a policeman in the movie series Lethal Weapon, with Mel Gibson. After that, his cinematic roles continued, the most famous of which are in: Maverick (1994), Antz (1998), Saw (2004), and Dream Girls (2006).
