A Spanish actress and model, born in Madrid, Spain. She began her career in her childhood. She appeared in many television commercials but decided to focus her energy on dancing. After studying classical ballet for nine years at the Spanish National Conservatory, Cruz continued training with a number of prominent dancers, and when she was fifteen years old, she participated in a talent test. She outperformed many other girls, and ended up getting several roles in Spanish series, such as Framed (1992). She made her film debut in Belle Epoque (1992), which won an Academy Award. She became the most famous actress in Spanish films, after which she started working in American films, such as Woman on Top (2000) and Vanilla Sky (2001). She won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008), and she earned three other Oscar nominations for Volver (2006), Nine (2009), and Parallel Mothers (2021). She married Javier Bardem in 2010. Among her other credits are Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011), Open Your Eyes (1997) and The Girl of Your Dreams (1998).
