A South African-Canadian director, writer, and producer, born on September 17, 1979, in Johannesburg, South Africa. At the age of 16, he met the South African actor and director Sharlto Copley as they attended the same high school, and Copley helped him develop his talent in design and 3D animation. At the age of 18, Blomkamp's family moved to Vancouver, where he attended the Vancouver Film School. Blomkamp began his career as a special effects specialist, participating in several television commercials, which helped him to begin directing short films, after which he presented feature films, including District 9 (2009) and Elysium (2013).
