Sharlto Copley is a South African actor and filmmaker. He was born on the 27th of November, 1973 in Johannesburg, South Africa. He is perhaps best known for his role as Wikus van de Merwe in “District 9”. Copley is an Anglo-African. He attended Redhill High School in Johannesburg where he was involved in amateur theater and film productions. Through these activities he met Neill Blomkamp whom he would collaborate with in future projects, including “District 9” which has received much critical acclaim. In 2014, Copley starred in the retelling of the Disney classic Sleeping Beauty "Maleficent," alongside Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning.
