Born in 1955 in Detroit, Michigan, he studied at the University of Montana. He began his artistic career in the television film Popeye Doyle. He is best known for his role as a sharp editor in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man series. He appeared in several films and series, but his most important role to date was in the 2014 film Whiplash for which he received the Best Supporting Actor award at the Gold Globes and the Oscars.
