An Afghan-Canadian director, actress and writer, born in India to an Afghan family in 1973. She spent her youth in Kabul, Pakistan, and then Canada, where she studied journalism and literature at Carleton University in Ottawa. Her experience of returning to Afghanistan in 1996 was the inspiration for the film Kandahar (2001), in which she starred.
