Iranian director, writer, and producer, born on May 29, 1957 in Tehran, Iran. He was released from prison by Islamic Revolution in Iran, yet he revolted against it when it turned to a dictatorship. His movies have been screened at many international film festivals. He belongs to the new wave movement of Iranian cinema. His movie Kandahar (2001) was chosen by Time magazine as one of the top 100 best movies of history of cinema. He is known for his realist, fantasy and surrealist movies. He left Iran in 2005 and travelled to Paris following the election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
