He is a British actor and director, born in 1961 in Glasgow, Scotland. He was raised with his mother, Elizabeth, who worked as a bus driver, and his father, Joseph, who worked in the field of painting and decoration. He graduated in 1991 from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. He gained fame through his role in The World Is Not Enough, and Trainspotting. His directorial debut was in Barney Thomson (2015).
