American author and screenwriter, born on August 13, 1938 in Los Angeles. He graduated in 1957 and was drafted into the Navy. After his service in 1961, he joined the University of Montana and obtained a CPA certificate. His career began as a writer in 1968. Among his most prominent works: L.A. Confidential (1997), Kate McShane (1975) and The Shooter (2007). He died on May 30, 2011 in Sherman Oaks, California.
