James Gray is an American screenwriter, director, and producer, born in New York in 1969. Gray made his first movie Little Odessa at the age of twenty-five, which received critical acclaim along with its actor Tim Roth. The movie won the Venice Film Festival’s prestigious Silver Lion Award. In 2000, he wrote and directed his second movie The Yards, which starred Mark Wahlberg, Charlize Theron, and James Caan. The film was selected for official competition at the Cannes International Film Festival and it marked the first collaboration between Gray and Joaquin Phoenix who he continued to work with many times after. After a long conflict with Miramax because of the last scene in The Yard, he directed the movie La Nuit Nous Appartient, which reflects on family and the world of the Russian mafia, which also received great reviews and was nominated in the 2007 Cannes International Film Festival competition. His movie Two Lovers, which took less than 40 days to direct, was also nominated at the Cannes International Film Festival competition. In 2012, he was selected as a member of the main competition jury at the International Film Festival of Marrakech, and in 2013, his film The Immigrant was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, which was inspired by the American classic dramas of the 1930s and 1940s.
