An American actor, born in Knoxville, Tennessee, to a pianist mother and a composer father. His twin brother is actor and musician Clinton Derricks-Carroll. Cleavant began his career writing songs before moving to New York to study acting. Some of his works include Moscow on the Hudson (1984) and Bluffing It (1987).
