A British actor, born in Elgin, Scotland in 1939. He began his acting career at the age of 45, having been an architectural draftsman and self-employed. He attended Glasgow College of Drama and was the eldest in the class. His most famous works include Hamish Macbeth (1995-1997), Braveheart (1995), The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc (1999), and Cloud Atlas (2012).
