A British actor, born in Elgin, Scotland in 1936. He began his acting career at the age of 45, having been an architectural draftsman, a self-employed upholsterer, and a theatrical landlord before that. He attended the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and was the oldest in the class. His most famous works include Hamish Macbeth (1995-1997), Braveheart (1995), The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc (1999), and Cloud Atlas (2012).
