An American lyricist, writer, and director, born in Ohio, USA. He was the youngest son of his parents, who had seven children and owned and operated a family restaurant. He attended Ohio State University but dropped out and moved to New York in 1960 to study acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. He briefly worked in newspaper writing before he began writing for the theater. His credits include The Dirtiest Show in Town (1980) and Dreamgirls (2006). He died in Palm Beach, Florida, USA, on May 26, 1991.
