An Irish actor and director, born in Dublin, Ireland. He studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London. He initially worked at the Royal National Theatre, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, and the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon, after which he took a break from acting for several years as he returned to Ireland to work as a high school teacher. At the age of thirty-four, Gleeson returned to acting through Dear Sarah (1989), after which he starred in many films, including In Bruges (2008) and Calvary (2014).
