He is a British actor of Sudanese origin, born in 1965 in Sudan. He moved with his family to the United Kingdom, where he studied geography and anthropology. He studied at The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA). He worked as a director and actor in many works and gained prominence in Kingdom of Heaven, Syriana, and Game of Thrones.
