American playwright and screenwriter who spent his youth in Ohio, where he went to college at Denison University. He then moved to New York and then Minneapolis. He wrote several award-winning Broadway productions aside from his work in film. His most notable works include Casanova (2005), The Duchess (2008), and Mr. Holmes (2015).
