A Canadian-born New Zealand actress, born in Manitoba, Canada. Her family moved to New Zealand when she was four years old. She moved with her mother to Los Angeles, where she finished high school. She then studied at Columbia University for a year before she dropped out and decided to pursue acting. She made her debut at age nine in the movie The Piano (1993), for which she earned an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. She gained fame for playing Rogue in the X-Men film series, as well as starring in the series True Blood, for which she won a Golden Globe in 2009. She also met her husband, actor Stephen Moyer, while filming the same series.
