An Indian writer, director, and producer, born in Ludhiana, Punjab, British India. He was the older brother of Yash Chopra and Dharam Chopra. After graduation, he obtained a master's degree in English literature from the University of Lahore. Having a deep passion for movies, he moved from higher education to film journalism. He began his career writing and editing film reviews for the Cine Herald magazine. In 1949, he produced his first film, Karwat (1949), which was a failure. He tried again as a producer and director in Afsana (1951). He established his own production company, and in 1955 produced a series of successful films such as Dhool Ka Phool (1959). His company switched from films to television in 1985 and presented several successful TV shows, most notably Mahabharat (1988). His son is Ravi Chopra. He died on November 5, 2008.
