An English writer, researcher and philologist, born in South Africa on January 3, 1892. In 1896 his father passed away and his mother and sister brought him back to England. He was educated at King George V School in Birmingham where he studied linguistics and obtained his BA in 1915. He is best known for his writing of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, which have been converted into many works of art. He died on September 2, 1973 in Bournemouth.
