American actor born on 1 October 1920 in New York. He made his debut in 1950 on the TV series The Big Story. He frequently collaborated with fellow comedian Jack Lemmon in a number of films, including The Odd Couple (1968), Grumpy Old Men (1993), and The Grass Harp (1995). He won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for The Fortune Cookie (1966). He passed away on 1 July 2000 due to a heart attack.
