American actor, director, and producer born on 20 February 1927 in Miami, Florida. He made his acting debut on Sepia Cinderella (1947). His directorial debut was Buck and the Preacher (1972). His most notable works include The Defiant Ones (1958), Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967), In the Heat of the Night (1967), and Lilies of the Field (1963), for which he won an Oscar for Best Leading Actor. He also won an honorary Oscar in 2002.
