American actor, director, and writer, born October 4, 1923 in Evanston, Illinois. His film debut was in Peer Gynt (1941). He won an Oscar in 1960 for Best Leading Actor for Ben-Hur. His notable roles include The Ten Commandments, Planet of the Apes and Soylent Green. He died on April 5, 2008 in Beverly Hills.
