American writer, director, and producer, he was born on July 6, 1962 in West Des Moines, Iowa. His film career began with the adaptation of his novel What's Eating Gilbert Grape into a screenplay in 1993. He's known for Pieces of April, Dan in Real Life, and Ben Is Back. He was nominated for an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for About a Boy (2002).
