An American author and retired astronaut, he was born on March 25, 1928 in Cleveland, Ohio. He was a captain during the Apollo 13 lunar mission in 1970, during which his team faced many difficulties before successfully returning to Earth. He co-authored the 1994 book Lost Moon, on which the 1995 film Apollo 13 was based on.
