A British director of Indian origin, born in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, and spent the first years of his life in Bombay, India, then moved to the United Kingdom with his family in 1946. He was educated at Clifton College in Bristol, England, and then studied English literature at Queens' College, Cambridge. He also directed many plays after graduating in 1960, and then joined the BBC as a trainee director. His credits include The Possession of Joel Delaney (1972) and Edward & Mrs. Simpson (1978).
