An American author, born in Manhattan, New York, USA, to a Russian immigrant father and a Lithuanian immigrant mother. He joined the army during World War II, where he trained as an army surgical technician. He then obtained a Bachelor of Arts from New York University in the United States, and worked as a social investigator. He also obtained a master’s degree in English from Brooklyn College in New York. Shortly thereafter, his first novel "The Warriors" was published in 1965, in addition to the novels "The Bag" and "Someone Just Like You". He died of lung cancer on January 5, 2013.
