A Japanese actor and singer, born in Tokyo, Japan. He is best known for playing the role of Hanbei in Sanjuro (1962) and the role of Genta in Kiru (1968). Both films were adapted from the same novel by Shûgorô Yamamoto. He received the Order of Culture in 2015, and the Person of Cultural Merit in 2007.
