He was a Greek director, writer and film producer, born on April 27, 1935. He is famous for his films that deal with contemporary political and historical issues in Greece. He won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival for his film Eternity and a Day (1998). He has also received several awards for his movies The Travelling Players (1975), and Ulysses' Gaze (1995). His early films dealt with the Nazi occupation of Greece, World War II and the Civil War. He died on January 24, 2012 from head injuries after being hit by a motorcycle near the port of Praias .
