An American screenwriter and journalist, born in Detroit, United States. He began his career as a journalist for the Detroit Times newspaper. He founded a weekly magazine dedicated to car racing, and also worked in Motor Life magazine for a short period before moving to Hollywood in his forties to work in screenwriting. He's known for Missing (1982) and The Hunt for Red October (1990). He died on April 28, 1999.
