An Irish-British actor, born in Dublin, Ireland. He spent a few years of his childhood in India, where his father served as an officer in the British Army. His family moved to Devon, and he attended Shrewsbury School. He received roles in England and Scotland. He gained fame after his role in the movie The Hasty Heart. His first movie was Good Morning, Boys (1937). His most important works include The Hasty Heart (1949), The Longest Day (1962), and The Dam Busters (1955). He died on December 3, 2009 in Lincolnshire, UK due to cancer. He married actress Catherine Stewart Crawford Grant-Bogle and actress Virginia Mailer.
