An American screenwriter and director, born in Washington, D.C., United States. She worked in experimental theater in New York City since her teenage years, then moved on to writing and directing short stories. She was the first African-American woman to be nominated for an Academy Award in the short film category. She was also nominated for a 2017 Writers Guild Award for Girl from Compton.
