He is a Puerto Rican director and producer, born in 1965 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. His father is from Peru while his mother is Spanish. He went to live with his sister in Boston, Massachusetts, and graduated from The Cambridge School of Weston in Massachusetts. After attending Harvard University's documentary program where he learned filmmaking, he went to Wesleyan University, where he met future collaborators Matthew Greenfield and Mike White. He received his MFA from AFI Conservatory in 1993. His notable credits include Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day (2014), The Good Girl (2002) and Youth in Revolt (2009).
