Iranian-French graphic novelist, cartoonist, illustrator, film director, and children's book author who was born on November 22, 1969 in Rasht, Iran. She grew up in Tehran in a communist Iranian family and attended the French-language school, Lycée Razi and became politically active since a young age. Her family sent her at the age 14 to Vienna, Austria, to escape the fundamentalist regime. She stayed in Vienna through her high school years. She studied visual communication, eventually obtaining a master's degree from Islamic Azad University in Tehran. She then moved to Strasbourg, France, where she works as an illustrator and author of children's books. She is known for The Voices (2014) and Chicken with Plums (2011). She was nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film for Persepolis (2007), which was based on her autobiographical graphic novel of the same name.
