A Scottish actor, director, and writer, born in Peterhead, Scotland, United Kingdom. He began his artistic career with directing. He directed many short works but was rejected by the National Film School, so he decided to turn to acting and worked in theater, then cinema and television. His works include The Magdalene Sisters, Children of Men, Tyrannosaur, and War Horse.
