Indian director, producer and screenwriter who directed several independent films that have been shown in major international film festivals including Black Friday (1993), Return of Hanuman (2007), and No Smoking (2007). His film Udaan (2010) was his first experience as a producer in a feature. Udaan (2010) was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival. After that, he returned to directing with That Girl in Yellow Boots (2011). Subsequently, his six-hour directorial effort Gangs of Wasseypur (2012) was shown at Cannes in the Directors' Week segment and once again garnered praise from the international press. His movie Ugly (2014) was screened in the Directors' Fortnight section at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival.
