An American writer born in 1964 in Philadelphia to an Italian family. She graduated from the University of Florida in 1987 and worked in many professions until settling on working in a bookshop. There, she had the opportunity to read a lot and then think about writing. She met with a representative of a publishing house who encouraged her to continue writing a story that she had started months ago, which was later adapted into the movie Because of Winn-Dixie (2005). She's also known for The Tale of Despereaux and Flora & Ulysses.
