A director and writer, born in Nashville, Tennessee, USA in 1977. She graduated from Florida A&M University. She received her graduate degree from NYU Tisch School of the Arts. In 2018, Dee Rees was the first black woman to be nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Adapted Screenplay category for her film Mudbound, which received more than 100 award nominations and was nominated for four Academy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards. Her debut feature film, Pariah, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, where it received the Excellence in Cinematography Award in 2011. Among her most notable films Pariah (2011), Bessie (2015), Mudbound (2017), and The Last Thing He Wanted (2020).
