A Serbian actor and director, born on November 24, 1954 in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia. He won the Palme d'Or at Cannes and the Silver Bear in Berlin. He attended the Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (FAMU). In 1981, he directed Do You Remember Dolly Bell?, which was nominated for the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. When Father Was Away on Business (1985) won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. His third film, Time of the Gypsies, won Best Director at Cannes in 1989. In 1993, his first American film, Arizona Dream, won the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival.
