An American actress, born in Springfield, Ohio, on October 14, 1893. She was of English, French and German descent. She was nominated for an Academy Award in 1947 and won in 1971, in addition to winning several honorary awards for her lifelong career such as being awarded a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960 for her efforts in the field of cinema. Among her most important works are: Way Down East (1920), The Night of the Hunter (1955), Duel in the Sun (1946), and The Wales of August (1987). She died in New York City, on February 27, 1993 from heart failure, 8 months before her centenary celebration.
