A German director and writer, born in Berlin, Germany. She came to prominence in the 1930s. She was arrested following Germany's defeat in World War II because of her closeness to Nazi leader Adolf Hitler. Later on, she was released. She was also famous for innovating creative techniques in the fields of cinematography and directing. Among her works was the documentary film Triumph of the Will (1935). The BBC described her documentaries as a breakthrough in the world of filmmaking. She died at age 101.
