A Greek writer, born in Thassos, and raised in Thessaloniki, Greece. He graduated from law school in the same city before moving to Athens, where he worked in journalism, then he was exiled from Greece following the coup of 1967. He settled in France, and returned to Greece after the fall of the regime. Between 1981 and 1984, he was the deputy director of the Greek state television channel ET1, and in 1996, he became the Greek ambassador to the UNESCO. He published more than 100 books, including novels, poetry books, and plays, and many of his works have been translated into different languages. Among his books are "And Dreams Are Dreams" and "The Harpoon Gun". His novel "Z" was adapted into the 1969 film of the same name. His novel also inspired the Indian film Shanghai (2012).
