American director, producer, and writer born to Czechoslovakian and Yugoslavian parents on 8 September 1971 in Seattle, Washington, US. He was childhood friends with director Christopher Nolan, with whom he co-directed and produced Tarantella (1989), an independent film. He attended the University of California, Santa Barbara. His solo directorial debut, the documentary Genghis Blues (1999), was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary feature. His other notable works include Trust Me (2020), and Happy (2012).
