An American journalist of German origin, born in Rosenheim, Germany. She studied literature at Antioch College in Ohio before joining New York University, where she earned a Master's degree in economics. In 1994, she began working in journalism, and when she became responsible for economic articles at the New York Times, she met mathematician John Nash through her coverage of the Nobel Prize for Economics. After that, she spent four years researching and writing a biography about him titled "A Beautiful Mind", which won the National Book Critics Circle Award in 1998. The biography was adapted into the 2001 film of the same name, starring Russell Crowe.
