American actor born on 7 April 1928 in Norman, Oklahoma, US. He made his acting debut in a non-speaking role on a Broadway show in 1954. His breakthrough role was on the film Maverick (1957). His other notable works include The Great Escape (1963), Murphy's Romance (1985), for which he was nominated for an Academy Award, and The Notebook (2004). He died on 19 July 2014 in Los Angeles, California, US.
