Gareth Evans is a Welsh director, screenwriter and action choreographer. Evans studied screenwriting and got his start in cinema making short films. He was hired to work on a documentary about traditional Indonesian martial arts game called pencak silat. Following this project, he became fascinated with Indonesian martial arts and brought this art form to the global film industry through his films Merantau (2009), The Raid: Redemption (2011) and The Raid 2 (2014).
