Irish actor and writer, born in Belfast, Northern Ireland. He studied at Methodist College Belfast and later studied at Queen's University Belfast. He also trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. He received an honorary doctorate from Queen's University in 2008 in performing arts. His works include Nightingales (1990-1993), Playing the Field (1998-2002), and Z Cars (1962-1978). He died on March 8, 2014, in Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England, United Kingdom due to a stroke.
