But his literary career did not actually begin until 1991, with the signing of his first detective novel, which was based mainly on the fictional character of the detective “Mario Conde” as its hero. He opened this series with the novel "The Complete Past", which was published in Mexico before being published in Cuba three years later, and is part of a novel quartet entitled "The Four Seasons". Padura was not satisfied with detective novels, despite the fact that they gave him wide fame in Cuba and Latin America, but he also wrote other more complex novels that draw inspiration from history in general. He also published studies and short stories, and continued to write scripts for foreign directors, and even contributed to converting some of his works into films and television. Among his works is 7 Days in Havana movie in 2012.
