American director and cinematographer, born in Moberly, Missouri, and raised in California, United States. He attended high school in California, and briefly studied chemistry at Santa Clara University in California before receiving a graduate degree from the University of Southern California School of Motion Picture Arts. He also served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He is known for In the Line of Fire (1993), Silverado (1985), and American Gigolo (1980).
