Fred Dalton Thompson is an American actor, politician, attorney and lobbyist. He was born in 1942 in Sheffield, Alabama. He earned a bachelor degree from Memphis State University before earning a law degree from Vanderbilt in 1967. From the 1960s to the 1980s, Thompson worked as a successful attorney before accepting appointments to governmental bodies like the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He got his first acting role in the 1987 murder mystery "No Way Out." He served in the United States Senate representing Tennessee from 1994 to 2003. At the end of his Senate term in 2003, Thompson joined the cast of the NBC television series "Law & Order" as Manhattan District Attorney Arthur Branch. In May 2007, he put his acting aside to pursue the Republican nomination for president in the 2008 election, but dropped out in January 2008. He is best known for his roles in "Die Hard 2" (1990) and "In the Line of Fire" (1993).
